Sunday, April 19, was also Mary MacEwan's 103rd birthday. Her friends and colleagues prepared a nice cake and ice cream and other finger foods to gather people together in celebration of Mary and her life of peace activism. She is a pioneer in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, est . 1915. She is a star! Still alert and gracious. Thanks for the great model of a woman in this 21st Century.
Last week was the Boston Marathon and one of our LAH volunteers ran to the finish line after training for it. Congratulations, Jennifer Glynn! I asked her to give us some other details:
"I ran the marathon in about 4 hours a bit slow for me but the weather was atrocious! Sunny the day before and after but the day of the race was 45 degrees, pouring rain and 20+ mph winds! But it was a blast. Spectators along the whole way keeping us going. The finish was spectacular. I can hardly walk now but hopefully my muscles will be back to normal soon! I run all the time but to train I upped my miles and added long runs on Saturdays usually between 14-18 miles. I will be happy to get back to a lighter running schedule and some other kinds of fitness. This was my 5th marathon and probably my last! I think I will stick to half marathons from now on!"
GET WELL, Alice! One of our alternate board members, Alice, fell off a ladder and crunched some bones. Do heal! Do know we appreciate you and your service to LAH.
I had my own health crisis today and went to Emergency at UMC. Thankfully, it was resolved. Thirty minutes before I left, the shift changed and who should enter the room, but Coy Collins, an LAH volunteer and our data reporter. Very comforting to know that LAH is there when needed--even in the guise of the emergency room nurse! Thanks, Coy!
It has been my experience lately to observe some of our elders as they decline in ability to keep a schedule, make phone calls, remember things. This is not new to the aging experience, but it has been noticeable. Now, a family member may be accompanying our elders to appointments or seeking out further help. Should you notice something you think needs to be reported, please call me. I can get the information to the emergency contacts or let our volunteers know what to expect.
April Paperwork!!!! AArrgghh! Yes, if you are an LAH volunteer, please fill in electronically or download and mail by May 5th. Thanks. Michele
