Food Delivery

Produce Delivery Program

Volunteers deliver fresh produce and bread to our seniors twice a month.

This program began with a monthly purchase of produce from Market on the Move (MOM), a program created by the 3000 Club in Phoenix to save produce from ending up in the landfill. Fruit and vegetables in 60-lb lots were sold for a $10 donation. LAH volunteers met at a designated MOM distribution site and divided purchases into small packages and delivered them to our participating seniors.

Circumstances changed. With the discontinuation of MOM and its replacement program, a bulk purchasing relationship was established with Food City, a local Tucson market.

Word spread, and more seniors asked to participate. This program become Lend A Hand's most popular program! In 2017, ten teams of volunteers delivered fresh produce, bread, and occasional special items to approximately 120 seniors twice a month. We plan to continue in the future, as funds allow.

LAH seniors can sign up for free produce delivery by contacting the LAH Coordinator at (520) 248-6882.

Food Bank Deliveries

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona provides Emergency Food Boxes to registered low-income individuals and families. They also administer Food Plus, a federal program specifically for low-income seniors 60 and over.

For years, monthly trips to the Food Bank for individual seniors to pick up their food were provided by LAH volunteers. The Food Bank is not located near the LAH service area, and a Board Member came up with the ingenious idea of arranging with the Food Bank to have a volunteer pick up and deliver Food Boxes & Food Plus for all the LAH seniors who are registered, rather than making multiple individual trips.

Seniors interested in this service should contact the LAH Coordinator at (520) 248-6882 to set up an appointment with the Food Bank to register for either program and arrange for a trip for the registration appointment. Once registered, deliveries are monthly. Recipients need to be re-register every 6-12 months.
